Bilingual blogging & a personal pledge

One of the things that stand out about me, as a person and a writer, is the fact that I am fully bilingual. I have been lucky enough to be exposed to both Spanish and English throughout my life — it is consequently a privilege to both express myself and teach both of them as foreign languages. It is also very funny to see the looks on people's faces when I switch from British Received Pronunciation to an Argentine accent in Spanish. Their shock gets me every time.

The downside? I often don't know in what language to write in and have felt that Coriolismo has been missing something because both languages represent me but I have simply not had enough time to sit down and finish translating everything. Despite the fact that I translate quickly (another side job), it's harder somehow to find the time after publishing a post.

Una de las cosas que se destacan de mí, como persona y escritora, es el hecho de que soy totalmente bilingüe. Tuve la suerte de estar expuesta a inglés y castellano desde que nací — como resulado, tengo el privilegio de expresarme y enseñar estos idiomas como lenguas extranjeras. También es muy gracioso ver las caras de las gente cuando cambio de un acento re británico a un acento argentino. Me río cada vez cuando escucho "Ah bueno, boluda, hablás castellano!"

Lo malo es que muchas veces no sé en qué idioma escribir y he sentido que a Coriolismo le estuvo faltando algo porque si bien ambos idiomas me representan, simplemente no tuve suficiente tiempo para sentarme y terminar de traducir todo. Pese a que traduzca rápido (otro laburo más), es más difícil encontrar el tiempo para hacerlo después de publicar.

The answer? I think I found it in Signe Hansen's slow fashion and minimalist style blog, Use Less, which is amazing and I recommend thoroughly (more to come in the new section, Not A Fashion Blogger!). As a Dane who speaks excellent English, Hansen does her videos in English in order to reach an international audience and her blog posts flit between Danish and English as you scroll through the paragraphs. The result is clean and complete: what more could you ask for?

So I'm going to try the same thing, mostly because a) finding the time afterwards to translate has just not worked, b) it's easier for me while also representing my style more fully, c) makes the blog less confusing and d) will give Coriolismo more cohesion. There are some articles that are only in English and others only in Spanish because I can't predict in what language a given article will be in. This, for example, is being written initially in English. Other articles might start off in Spanish, because some thoughts apparently gasp for air in different languages. I often tell myself off in Italian when I am alone, for example. "Ma dove hai lasciato le chiavi, Valentina?"

La respuesta, creo, la encontré en el blog de Signe Hansen Use Less, sobre estilo y moda minimalista que está buenísimo y recomiendo al 100% (más sobre moda en la nueva sección "Not A Fashion Blogger.") Como danesa que habla muy bien en inglés, Hansen hace sus videos en inglés para llegar a un público más grande internacional y sus publicaciones intercalan inglés y danés entre los párrafos. El resultado es limpio y completo: ¿qué más puedo pedir?

Así que voy a tratar de hacer lo mismo, más que nada porque a) encontrar tiempo para traducir después claramente no funciona, b) es más fácil para mí y me representa mejor, c) el blog de por sí va a ser menos confuso y d) le va a dar más coherencia a Coriolismo. Hay algunos artículos sólo en inglés y otros sólo en castellano porque no puedo predecir en qué idioma va a salir un artículo en particular. Este, por ejemplo, lo estoy escribiendo en inglés. Otro podría arrancar en castellano, porque aparentemente algunos pensamientos salen a la luz en distintos idiomas. Cuando estoy sola, me reto en italiano por ejemplo. "Ma dove hai lasciato le chiavi, Valentina?"

That might be private but that's another thing: Coriolismo is about to get more personal. The blog started out as a portfolio of sorts to show that I could analyse politics before getting into professional journalism. Now, as a freelance journalist and beginning my journey as a writer has meant that life has a lot more self reflection and new projects. For example, I've started a podcast, Plus Five Four, which I love. I teach languages, tap dance, act, sing and in general do things that make me happy as well as deal with freelancing and living alone. It's been weird not sharing it all here.

So as of 2018, prepare for more content: not coming up with the columns readers have been used to and feeling more inclined to write other things has meant that I have become blocked. Undecided as to what to share, I've shared virtually nothing: that changes as of today. I hope you'll enjoy the things to come.

Quizás sea medio privado eso pero ahí otro tema: Coriolismo va a ser más personal. El blog empezó como una especie de portfolio para mostrar mis capacidades de análisis político antes de entrar profesionalmente al periodismo. Ahora, como periodista freelance y habiendo empezado mi camino a ser escritora significa que mi vida se presta más a la reflexión y nuevos proyectos. Arranqué un podcast el año pasado, por ejemplo, enseño idiomas, bailo tap, actúo, canto y en general hago cosas que me hacen feliz además de lidiar con la vida de freelance y vivir sola. Fue raro no compartir estas cosas acá.

Así que a partir de 2018, preparense para más contenido: al no tener tiempo de escribir las columnas a las cuales se acostumbraron mis lectores y sintiendo ganas de escribir otras cosas llevó a que me bloqueara. Sin poder decidir qué compartirles, no compartí casi nada: eso cambia hoy. Espero que lo disfruten.
