My 2018 winter capsule

Wow, it's been a long time since I wrote here. Thank you so much for all your comments on Instagram on my autumn capsule and the feedback on my fashion choices (which has been, overall, really positive!) Anyway...to more pictures of clothes and thoughts on fashion, this time for Argentine winter!

Wow, hace mil que no escribo acá. Mil gracias por sus comentarios en Instagram y por sus devoluciones, que por lo general fueron muy positivos! En fin: acá más fotos de ropa y mis pensamientos, edición invierno.

My thoughts going in // Mis pensamientos

First, a comment on my autumn capsule. I'll be writing a blog post about it soon but it should be said that I absolutely loved it. I did purchase a couple of things throughout the season but honestly, it didn't feel like I was "missing" much — just specific items for specific weather! In fact, I barely used some of the pieces I had chosen.

Primero un comentario rápido sobre mi cápsule de otoño. Voy a escribir algo sobre esto en otro momento pero debo decir que me encantó. Sí compré un par de cosas pero la verdad que no sentía que me "hacía falta" algo — sólo un par de cosas para el clima! En realidad, hubo un par de cosas que casi ni usé de lo que había elegido.

The important thing here is that it was a great starting point for my winter capsule: I was more than happy with how it had turned out and I trusted my criteria for what to pick out.

So, my objective for winter was basically the same as for autumn: to minimise as much as possible with clothes that combined well together for a maximum number of outfits. However, there were a few changes to how I defined the actual pieces.

Lo importante es que fue un gran punto de partida para mi cápsula de invierno: estaba más que contenta cómo había salido todo y confiaba en mi criterio para elegir la ropa de invierno.

Entonces mi objetivo para invierno fue basicamente el mismo: minimizar lo más posible, con ropa que combinara bien para una cantidad máxima de atuendos. Lo que cambió fue cómo definí la ropa misma.

Defining the winter capsule // Definiendo la cápsula

For the autumn capsule, I had chosen a specific painting to define my colour palette: I absolutely loved this approach because it helped a lot with deciding on what clothes to include (or more importantly, what not to include). It's an approach I was 100% recommend, make sure to check out my autumn capsule blog post for more information on how I did it.

Throughout autumn I had purchased several items in thrift shops that I absolutely loved, so this time I had specific items that I was determined to include. I bought some of the things in my winter capsule two months ago and have genuinely not worn them until now (some didn't make it into this capsule and won't be worn until spring/summer). They are pieces that I had been looking for in general (hello, "Clothes Wish List" Pinterest board) so the intentionality of my thrift shopping was still there and I wouldn't consider them as "impulse purchases."

A lo largo del otoño fui comprando cosas en ferias americanas que me encantaron, así que esta vuelta tenía ítems específicos que quería incluir sí o sí. Compré algunas de las prendas de esta cápsula invernal hace dos meses y no las usé hasta ahora (y otras no las verés hasta primavera/verano). Son cosas que estaba buscando en general (hola, Pinterest) así que toda compra fue absolutamente intencional y no considero que hayan sido compras "impulsivas."

When it came to thinking about what I wanted from the capsule, there were two aspects: texture and play. Outfits that incorporate different textures are automatically more interesting to me, so I made sure to include a variety of fabrics and finishes — fluff, metallic, wool, appliqués, etc.

Then, the idea of "playing" came from a video I saw a while back on capsule wardrobes which defined a kind of fashion spectrum between being basic — not a bad thing, it just means you might go more for staples and neutral colours — and being playful, which often means having more items to give room for it. After using the autumn capsule wardrobe I found out that although I do go for jeans and button-ups, I love colour and as I've already mentioned, contrast — one of my favourite outfits from the autumn capsule was a mix of prints that I'd never thought to combine before.

Finally, I decided that I would try to wear more short/midi skirts: it's a style that I like on other people (so many pins) but don't tend to go for because I still think of skirts as "special occasion wear." I know.

En cuanto a lo que buscaba para esta cápsula, habían dos cosas: texturas y juego. Atuendos que incluyen distintas texturas son automáticamente más interesantes para mí, así que me aseguré de incluir una variedad de tejidos y terminaciones — pelusa, metal, lana, apliqués, etc.

Después, la idea de "jugar" viene de un video que vi hace rato que definía una especia de espectro de moda que va entre ser básicx — usar prendas básicas de colores neutros, lo cual no es malo — y ser juguetonx, lo cual implica por lo general tener más ítems para así tener con qué jugar. Me di cuenta gracias a la cápsula otoñal que por más que uso más que nada jeans y camisa, me encanta el color y, como dije antes, el contraste — uno de mis atuendos preferidos fue una mezcla de estampados que nunca se me hubiera ocurrido combinar antes.

Por último, decidí que iba a tratar de usar más polleras: un estilo que me gusta en otras personas (muchos pins en Pinterest...) pero no tiendo a usar porque sigo pensando en polleras como prendas "para ocasiones especiales." Ya sé, cualquiera.

Building the capsule // Armando la cápsula

As I tried to create a wardrobe around my new pieces, there was a stumbling block: my new shape. I say new shape and not "weight" because I have no idea how much I weigh and it's a measurement I usually find irrelevant for pretty much anything. The point is that I have changed and my clothes have not.

There was a dress that I couldn't wear when I was creating my autumn capsule but this time, most of my clothes just weren't fitting properly (dresses, trousers and shirts). It wasn't usually outlandish, but just enough for me to feel uncomfortable. That's the main reason why it's taken so long to create this capsule: I've taken my time to find new pieces that a) I genuinely think I'll get a lot of wear out of and b) fit me properly.

A medida en que trataba de armar un ropera al rededor de mis prendas nuevas, hubo un pequeño obstáculo: mi nueva forma. Digo forma y no "peso" porque en este momento no sé cuál es mi peso y es una medida que por lo general me resulta irrelevante. El punto es que yo he cambiado y mi ropa no.

Cuando hice mi cápsula otoñal, hubo un vestido que ya no me quedaba pero esta vez, la mayoría de mi ropa no me quedaba del todo bien (vestidos, pantalones y camisas). No era ridículo, pero sí lo suficiente como para que no me sintiera cómoda. Esa es la razón principal por la cual tardé tanto más en crear esta cápsula: me tomé el tiempo de encontrar prendas que a) genuinamente creo que vaya a usar y b) me quedan bien.

As I had been shopping over the past few months, it's hard to pinpoint where the "haul" would be defined. If we were to take shopping trips I made after starting on the capsule, these would be some of my new things, all of which were found in vintage shops:

a red velvet dress: I feel amazing in this number, which reminds me of 60s mod dresses;
a caramel-coloured, tuckable turtleneck made of wonderfully soft viscose;
a white, long-sleeved mesh top which was perfect to replace a lace one that I'm not that into at the moment;
a dark grey cardigan (I had got rid of one ages ago because I had used it so much, so I'm really glad to finally replace it)

Dado que había comprado ropa durante el otoño es medio difícil definir cuando fui de "shopping" para cosas nuevas. Si tomáramos en cuenta las idas a la feria americana que hice después de arrancar con esta cápula, estas serían un pero de cosas nuevas:

un vestido de terciopelo rojo que me hace sentir increíble
un top color caramelo de cuello alto que puedo meter en los pantalones
una remera manga larga blanca tejida, perfecta para reemplazar una de encaje que no me gustaba cómo me quedaba
un cardigan gris oscuro (había donado uno hace rato porque lo había usado un montón: estoy chocha que finalmente lo pude reemplazar!)

Other "finds" were the result of a massive decluttering process going on at my parents': my old black school coat turned up, which I was overjoyed about, as did a Mickey Mouse T-shirt that I bought in 2014 for a skiing trip and had apparently not lost. I also got a fluffy white sweater with red sequin polka dots from my sister.

Otras cosas que encontré, literalmente, incluyeron un tapado que usaba en el colegio cuando vivía en Inglaterra y una remera de Mickey Mouse que compré en 2014 (y había dado de perdida). También heredé un suéter blanco con puntos rojos de lentejuelas de mi hermana.

It wasn't so much like the autumn capsule but after buying the tcardigan, I looked at my wardrobe a few days later and took out a couple of items and voilà. It felt finished, finally. So here it is:

No fue tan tajante como la cápsula otoñal pero después de comprar el cardigan, miré mi ropero un par de días después, saqué un par de cosas y listo. Se sentía terminado, finalmente. Así que acá tenemos:

I hadn't defined a colour palette except for attempting to make it "lighter" than your usual winter capsules (just because it's cold doesn't mean you have to wear dark colours) but after mixing and matching I think the base colour would be brown because there are several hues of it across the board.

No había definido una paleta de colores, salvo una idea de tener más "brillo" que un ropero de invierno normal (sólo porque haga frío no significa que tengas que usar colores oscuros) pero después de tanto mezclar y combinar creo que el color de base sería marrón porque hay distintos tonos incluídos dentro de la cápsula.
