A haulternative, based on the buyerarchy of needs
Some context
I'm sure a few people are reading the title and thinking "Wha-?" Just sit tight, I'll explain. But just a heads up, since the summer capsule started so late, this post is in lieu of the "capsule update" I would usually write: it's only been a month, so nothing's really changed!
First off: the word "haulternative." There is a trend of "hauls," particularly on YouTube, where fashion bloggers essentially show off an exorbitant amount of clothes that they have bought (or have been gifted) from fast fashion brands like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara. These videos and blog posts are very popular. This is, of course, anathema to the slow fashion movement as they promote buying into trends and, worse, cheap and unethically-made clothing that will in all likelihood end up in landfill.

Pero quería avisar antes que como empezó tan tarde mi cápsula de verano, no voy a estar publicando una actualización como siempre. Pasó un mes no más, no hubo muchos cambios...pero bueno, ¡acá tienen este haulternative!
Para empezar, la palabra "haulternative": una mezcla de "haul" y "alternativa." Hay una tendencia, particularmente en YouTube, en donde bloguers de moda básicamente exhiben una cantidad exorbitante de ropa que se han comprado en tiendas de fast fashion como H&M, Forever 21 y Zara. Estos videos y publicaciones son muy populares, pero anatema al movimiento de moda ecológica, dado que promueven comprar según tendencias y, para peor, comprar ropa barata hecha de manera poco ética que probablemente termine en un basural.

In response, those who raise awareness around sustainability in fashion came up with "haulternatives": alternative ways of going about hauls such as using clothes you already own in a different way, mending your clothes to give them new life, etc. Here we come to the "buyerarchy of needs." The amazing Sarah Lazarovic, a designer and behavioural economist, came up with this brilliant hierarchy of buying needs based on Abraham Maslow's 1943 hierarchical description of human needs, with the most basic motivation at the bottom.
Lazarovic's pyramid essentially provides a guideline to being more sustainable regarding clothes: "use what you have" is the bedrock while "buying" new clothes is the last resort. New, in this case, being newly produced. Based on this buyerarchy, I thought I'd do my own "haulternative" with things I've acquired one way or the other over the past few months. Let's go!
Como respuesta, aquellas personas que abogan por la sustentabilidad han pensado en "haulternatives": formas alternativas de conseguir ropa "nueva" como por ejemplo usar lo que ya tenés o arreglando ropa para usarla un rato más, etc. Y acá llegamos al "buyerarchy of needs," algo así como la "comprarquía de necesidades." La increíble Sarah Lazarovis, diseñadora y economista conductual, hizo esta jerarquía genial basada en la descripción de Abraham Maslow de las necesidades humanas, con las necesidades más básicas abajo de todo.
Esta pirámide de Lazarovic esencialmente nos provee una hoja de ruta sobre cómo ser más sustentable cuando se trata de ropa: "usá lo que ya tenés" es la base mientras que "comprar ropa nueva" es la última instancia. Nueva, en este caso, se refiere a ropa nuevamente confeccionada. Basado en esta "comparquía," pensé que haría un "halternative" propio sobre las cosas que he adquirido de una manera u otra estos últimos meses. Arranquemos!
Use what you have // Usá lo que ya tenés
Here's a shirt that I already owned and revamped lately: it was a hand-me-down that I had already been using, but it was missing a couple of buttons. I happened to have a bunch of black buttons in my sewing box (which somehow escaped my multiple purges) that actually fit the buttonholes! So I decided to unstitch all of them and alternate beige and black buttons and I've been using the shirt a lot more as a result. I love the subtle detail.
Then, inspired by Tickover over on Instagram, I decided to fix a hole on it this week by doing some embroidery. I scrolled through Pinterest for easy star patterns and voilá! A little black star to complement the buttons. It's not perfect, but I loved it so much that I'm thinking of maybe using it again in some sort of pattern.
Acá tenemos una camisa que ya tenía, pero que mejoré ultimamente. La había heredado y venía usándola pero le faltaba un par de botones. De casualidad, encontré unos botones negros en mi caja de coser que entraban en los ojales! Así que decidí sacar todos los botones y alternar beige y negro. Me encantó el resultado, ese detalle como sutil, y la estuve usando mucho más que antes.
Después, inspirado por Tickover en Instagram, decidí arreglar un agujero que tenía con un bordado. Busqué en Pinterest las maneras más fáciles de bordar una estrella y listo! Una estrella negra chiquita que complementa los botones negros. No es perfecta, pero me gustó tanto que estoy pensando repetirla como estampado.
Borrow // Pedir prestado
So back in January, my partner and I had an impromptu outing come up and I was in my lilac everday shift dress. Which, you know, was fine, but I wanted to maybe add something to make it more night-appropriate. I sound like a conservative grandparent but bottom line, I didn't really feel comfortable wearing it out to a bar. Thankfully, I was at my parent's place, so I was able to borrow this short-sleeved peach and lilac duster from my mother. Add red lipstick, which I thankfully had in my handbag, and tadaa! I felt fabulous and ready (see the second photo).
Bueno, en enero salió de la nada una juntada con mi pareja y estaba en un vestido de todos los días que me encanta, pero quería algo más como para salir. Sí, sé que me hace sonar como un abuelx conservadora pero ya fue, básicamente, no quería ir a un bar así. Por suerte estaba en lo de mis viejos así que mi madre me pudo prestar este tapadito violeta y naranja. Agregué labial rojo, que por suerte tenía en la cartera y tadaa! Absolutamente fabuloso (ver la segunda foto.)
Swap // Canjear
As I mentioned in this looking back post, I hosted my first ever clothing swap towards the end of January and I absolutely loved it. My friends looked way better in the clothes I had decided to swap and I have pieces that I love, including this striped top and black dress. With pockets. That used to carry my friend's kitten. It just makes things a little more special, you know? It's made it into my summer capsule and I'm grateful for how lightweight it is.
I also got a beautiful grey cardigan that I couldn't bear to wear even for the photo because it's just too hot.
Como mencioné en esta publicación, tuve mi primer trueque de ropa en enero y me encantó el programa. Mis amigas lucían mucho mejor en mi ropa que decidí largar y ahora tengo cosas que me encantan, incluyendo esta remera manga larga y vestido negro. Con bolsillos. Que antes llevaban el gatito de una amiga. Lo hace un toque más especial, ¿vieron? Ahora está en mi cápsula de verano y agradezco lo liviano que es.
También conseguí un cardigan gris hermoso pero no pude ni pensar en ponérmelo con el calor que hace.
Thrift // Comprar vintage
Two items that I've thrifted this year (well, in February, because I didn't buy anything in January) include this brilliant reversible coat with a hood. I had been looking for a hooded coat for a while, so I was already sold...then I found out that it's reversible. Amazing. The hood had to be sewn in, with different coloured buttons on both sides but that was easy enough. I actually ended up using it the same day I bought it because it got really cold!
Then there's the "animal" print shirt: I love the fact that there are live animals portrayed as the animal print and, being blue and white, it fits perfectly with my wardrobe. I had actually seen it over a year ago in the vintage shop and thought it had been sold!
Dos ítems que compré vintage este año (bueno, en febrero porque no compré nada en enero) incluyen esta campera impermeable, reversible y con capucha. Hacía rato que estaba buscando una campera con capucha así que ya me había convencido...pero ahí vi que era reversible y fue tipo, ya está. La capucha estaba suelta así que tuve que buscar botones que combinaran con ambos lados y coserlas, lo cual fue fácil. Al final lo usé el mismo día porque de repente hizo mucho frío.
Después está la remera "animal print": me encanta que hayan animales vivos como el estampado y soy de usar mucho azul y blacno así que encaja perfecto con todo. En realidad la había visto el año pasado en la feria americana y pensé que la habían vendido!
As any reader of this blog will know by this point, I adore thrifting to the point where I've created a little database called "Find Ferias" to share the joy. In fact, with the exception of the Birkenstocks, this entire outfit is thrifted from three different thrift shops that you can check out in the find ferias section.

I haven't made anything from scratch, but if you follow me on Instagram you'll know that I'm constantly heading to the tailor and revamping my clothes by sewing them (see "use what you have"...) or dyeing them a different colour. That's the closest I've come and for now, I don't think I have any particular reason (or enough money!) to have something made especially for me.
No he hecho nada de cero pero si me siguen en Instagram, saben que estoy constantemente yendo a la modista y cambiando mi ropa con tinturas y con costura básica (ver "usar lo que ya tenés). Es lo más cerca que llegué, no tengo ninguna razón en particular (ni la plata) como para pedir que alguien me haga una prenda de cero por ahora.
Buy // Comprar
I haven't bought anything new since early 2018, which was back when I was on holiday in Melbourne: I went to the lovely A.BCH, where I managed to meet and chat to the amazing owner Courtenay Holm. A.BCH is a sustainable, ethical Australian clothing brand that is incredibly transparent about their organic materials, production process and work. I bought a grey T-shirt and black sweater there, which has quickly become an absolute favourite. I don't know, I just thought I'd give A.BCH a shoutout because they're doing it right in an industry that does a lot of harm — it's good to know that it's possible.
No compro nada nuevo desde principios de 2018, cuando estaba de vacaciones en Melbourne: fui a A.BCH, donde pude conocer la increíble dueña, Courtenay Holm. A.BCH es una compañía ética y sustentable australiana que es increíblemente transparente en cuanto a sus materiales orgánicos, proceso de producción y trabajo. Compré una remera gris y un suéter negro que rápidamente se convirtió en una prenda preferida. No sé, pensé que estaría bueno mencionarles porque están haciendo las cosas bien en una industria que está haciendo mucho daño. Está bueno saber que es posible.
