Looking back: 19F 2019
Looking back at the past week with a photo or a selection of my favourites shots along with my thoughts and impressions.
On February 19th, there was a pañuelazo held in front of the Argentine Congress, with pro-abortion activists and supporters gathering outside in the intense, humid heat to hold up their green scarves (a symbol of their support) in a show of support for legalising abortion.
El 19 febrero, el Día de Acción Verde por el Derecho al Aborto, hubo un pañuelazo en frente del congreso, con activistas y ciudadanes bancándose la humedad terrible y el calor para tener en alto sus pañuelos y pedir el aborto legal.
This was the second pañuelazo ever, held all over the country, and it felt different to last year: more determined, more focused. Last year was more of a party (I wrote my thoughts on this, it was just after arriving from holiday), mostly gleeful, and although there was that same vibe this year, the bedrock sentiment was one of gritted teeth. The pro-abortion campaign is set to present the bill yet again, no matter the policial agenda: there was an overall message "we are here for the long haul, no matter what. It will become law (´será ley')."
Fue el segundo pañuelazo que tuvo lugar en todo el país y se sintió distinto al año pasado: más decidido, más centrado, casi. El año pasado fue más una fiesta desafiante (escribí sobre esto, fue justo cuando volví a Buenos Aires), regocijado, y aunque hubo de esas vibras alegres el sentimiendo de fondo fue de puños cerrados. La campaña nacional va a presentar el proyecto de ley de vuelta, sin importar la agenda política actual: el mensaje general, "estamos acá presentes siempre, no importa qué. Será ley."
One thing I loved was that this year, the language was more inclusive and despite tensions that have flared up lately, the trans and non binary communities were included in the demand for legalising abortion. That being said, politics were much more prominent than last year's pañuelazo, with party T-shirts amd cries of "Lower the flags!" from annoyed protesters, in reference to the party banners that stood above the crowd.
Una cosa que me encantó fue que este año el lenguaje fue más inclusivo y, pese a las tensiones que hubo ultimamente, las comunidades trans y no binaries fueron incluídas discursivamente en el pedido por el aborto legal. Dicho esto, la política fue figura, más que el año pasado, con remeras partidarias y gritos de "Bajen la bandera" de personas irritadas por las banderas que flameaban por encima de la multitud.
It may not have received that much attention in the media, but that doesn't bother me: as I said (I think) last year after the Senate vote, we will always be here and continue to show up. Laying the groundwork doesn't make for good headlines, but that's how you get the job done.
Quizás no haya recibido tanta atención en los medios principales, pero eso no me molesta: como dije el año pasado, creo, justo después del voto en el senado, siempre estaremos acá y continuaremos a estar presentes. Establecer los cimientos no suele llegar a los titulares, pero así es como logramos las cosas.
