A look into my ring collection
Hello, corionautas! This one is based on my Instagram followers, who showed quite some interest in an Instastory where I showed my newly-organised jewellery box and a ring I modified recently. The interest in my style still feels surreal, really, but since I've been decluttering and have recently obtained some new things, I thought that I might as well.
Rings is the biggest category and, I think, the most commented, so I'll stick to them: I doubt I'll go in-depth on every single one (they're all pretty significant, otherwise I wouldn't keep them) but hopefully, you'll get an overall idea. Let me know if you want to know more about my other accessories!
One final disclaimer: this is definitely not a "rings everyone should have in their collection" or anything like that (I know that's a very trendy way of going about fashion blog posts). I feel like jewellery is really personal and we usually put a lot of thought and emotion into every item, so being prescriptive doesn't make much sense to me. Going through our parent's jewellery boxes wouldn't be half as fun if we all had the same "must-haves," right?

Esto lo estoy escribiendo a base de sus pedidos en Instagram: mostraron bastante interés en mi caja de joyas (me siento muy abuela diciendo eso...) toda organizadita y un anillo que modifiqué hace poco. El hecho de que les interese mi estilo me sigue pareciendo una locura pero como me estuve deshaciendo de varias cosas y conseguí otras, es un bastante buen momento para hacerlo.
Anillos son de lo que más tengo (y las cosas que reciben más comentarios por lo general) así que voy a hacerles un tour de mis anillos. No creo que entre en mucho detalle sobre cada uno porque son todos bastante significativos (por eso los sigo teniendo) pero con suerte tendrán una idea general. Avisen si quieren más posts sobre mis accesorios!
Una última cosa: esto no es "los anillos que todxs deberíamos tener." Para nada. Sé que es un artículo que está re de moda escribir, las "cosas esenciales," "no te pierdas," "conseguí esto o lo otro" pero siento que la joyería es una cosa casi íntima, por lo cual no tiene sentido escribir algo prescriptivo. Hurgar la caja de accesorios de tus xadres no sería tan divertido si todxs tuviéramos lo mismo, no?
I didn't really have any rings until 2014 so it was quite surprising to me that this had become the biggest category. These are the first two I bought: the silver filigree design ring on the left took my breath away when I first saw it in a vintage market in San Telmo. It was enormous, literally four times bigger than it is now. For some reason, at the time I thought that rings were something that were gifted to you but since nobody seemed intent on giving me one I thought "sod that" and bought it.
The same day, I had seen a beautiful turquoise ring: it seemed rather heavy to me at the time but also, gorgeous. However, I just couldn't bring myself to buy it. On returning three days later, I half-heartedly came to the same conclusion. I was walking very slowly away from the stall when I received an email: my thesis had been approved and I had now officially graduated university. Back to the stall I went and I didn't take that ring off for about two years.
No usaba anillos hasta el 2014, con lo cual me resultó medio sorprendente que fuera la categoría más grande. Acá están los primeros dos que compré: el de filigrana me encantó ni bien la vi. Por alguna razón, en su momento tenía la noción de que los anillos eran algo que se regalaba: sin embargo, al parecer nadie quería regalarme uno así que pensé "ya fue" y me compré este.
El mismo día, había visto un anillo precioso con una turquesa: pensé que era demasiado grande (me hace gracia recordarlo ahora) pero también, me encantó. Pero no me animé a comprarlo. Volví tres días después, llegué con algo de tristeza a la misma conclusión. Alejándome del lugar, me llegó un mail: había aprobado mi tesis y me había oficialmente graduado. Volví a las corridas y no me lo saqué por un par de años.
I also have a little collection of more minimal rings all made by Argentine artisans that I love to wear together. From left to right (in order of purchase):
tiny squiggly ring from El Bolsón artisanal fair;
beautifully minimal circle ring by Prata Minimal;
adorable house ring by Clara&Yema to commemorate moving out of my parents' (this one gets a lot of comments and the owners are lovely, Clara even gave me advice on visiting Australia!);
and the snake ring by Morten Joyería that I call Lucifer. It's the only brass ring I own and I got it to celebrate my acceptance into CUNY. Julieta, the owner, is also a lovely human and was very patient while I debated whether to get it in silver or in brass
También tengo una mini-colección de anillos más minimalistas todos hechos por artesanxs argentinxs: me gusta mucho combinarlos. De izquierda a derecha (en orden cronológico):
anillo serpenteante diminuto que compré en la feria artesanalEl Bolsón;
anillo circular hermoso de Prata Minimal;
anillo casa adorable de Clara&Yema para commemorar irme a vivir sólo (este me lo comentan todo el tiempo y las dueñas son un amor, Clara me dio altos consejos para cuando visité Australia);
y el anillo serpiente de Morten Joyería. Le puse "Lucifer." Es lo único de bronce que tengo y lo compré porque me aceptaron a la maestría en CUNY. Julieta, la dueña, es otro ser humano buea onda que fue muy paciente mientras yo debatía si llevarme este o la versión en plata.
Then there's my "ringo," my Ringo ring, which I made about six years ago using Beatle-themed stationary and a button. I've had to reglue this several times but I refuse to get rid of it because it's kitsch and I love making that pun.
Ah, mi anillo de Ringo Starr: me divierte hacer el chiste de que es mi "ring-o" (el nivel de comedia, por favor). En fin, lo hice con el dibujito de Ringo y un botón, que justo encajaba perfecto. Eso fue hace como seis años y ya se rompió varias veces pero no quiero dejar de hacerlo: es muy simpático y kitsch.
Now, the only ring that was actually gifted! I genuinely gasped when I opened the box with this one: it was a Christmas gift from my partner's mother and is now a beloved item on my rotation. I love all the details in this silver artisanal ring, which was made by Juan Vellavsky (all of his work is pretty breathtaking, would 100% recommend just scrolling through the pictures). The red accents and the engraving that goes all the way to the side of the ring, the attention to detail is just gorgeous and I love wearing it as a statement piece.
Ahora, el único anillo que me regalaron! Genuinamente me quitó el aliento (suena como una grasada pero es verdad) cuando abrí la caja. Fue un regalo de navidad de la madre de mi pareja y ahora lo uso todo el tiempo. Me encantan todos los dealles de este anillo artesanal, hecho por Juan Vellavsky (todas sus obras son increíbles, recomendaría mirar las fotos de su trabajo). Los acentos rojos y grabado que extiende hasta los costados...la atención y el detalle me resulta lindísimo y me encanta usarlo.
Onto heirlooms: this ring features the Argentine national stone, the Incan Rose (rhodochrosite) and was a present from my dad to my mum. Neither are completely sure when this was but my dad is pretty sure it came from the Northern province of Salta. Anyway, did you know that the Incas believed that this stone held the blood of their ancestors? Creepy, but pretty appropriate with this one.
Ahora, los reliquias familiares: este anillo tiene la piedra nacional argentina, rodocrosita, y fue un regalo de mi padre a mi madre. Ningunx sabe cuándo fue pero creen que vino de Salta. En fin, sabían que lxs Incas creían que esta piedra condensaba la sangre de sus ancetrxs? Medio raro, pero apropiado en este caso.
My latest finds were a literal find: rings that belonged to my paternal grandmother and I randomly found the other day at my parents' place. I recognised the first two: the black signet-esque one was in fact one of my grandfather's cufflinks that my grandma then had made into this beautiful, badass bespoke ring. Strange to write "grandma" and "badass" in the same sentence, but that's how I feel when I wear it.
Los últimos anillos que consegui fueron un hallazgo literal y sorprendente: encontré una cajita con anillos de mi abuela. Reconocí los primeros dos: el anillo negro tipo sello solía ser un gemelo de mi abuelo. Mi abuela lo mandó a hacer después de que mi abuelo falleciera y el resultado es este anillo artesanal que me empodera cuando lo uso.
The second one I recognised was the pearl ring below. This is the modified one I mentioned in the intro: it used to have two set on top of each other, like a figure of eight. I took it to the jeweller's that I always go to in San Isidro to replace it and we couldn't find a pearl the same grey colour as the previous one (both pearls were in fact fake).
However, the woman at the shop (who knows me pretty well by this point) suggested getting rid of it entirely and just thoroughly cleaning the silver underneath. I absolutely love the result and I know I'll wear it far more often like this: I'm sure my grandma wouldn't have minded.
El segundo que reconocí fue este anillo de perla. Este fue el que modifiqué, que mencioné en la introducción: solía tener dos perlas una arriba de otra, en forma de ocho. Lo llevé a la joyería que voy siempre en San Isidro a reemplazarla pero no podíamos encontrar una parecida (las dos son artificiales, por cierto).
Sin embargo, la encargada (que ya me conoce bastante bien), sugirió usarlo con sólo una perla y limpiar profundamente el anillo. Tenía razón: amo cómo quedó y sé que lo voy a usar mucho más. Creo que a la abuela le hubiera gustado.
Finally, the massive mystery ring (impossible to get it to stand on its own for the photo!). It ridiculous to me at first glance, but I then found I couldn't take it off (as in, I didn't want to: thankfully, you can change its size). I gave myself a month to decide whether or not to keep it and I've just completely fallen in love with it. It has no identifying marks so we're not sure if this was my grandma's or my great-grandmother's. If anyone has any idea what era this could possibly have been made, please let me know!
Finalmente, el anillo misterioso y macizo (imposible hacer que se quede parado como para sacarle foto aparte!). Me parecía ridículo cuando lo miré por primera ver pero después no me lo quería sacar. Me di un mes para decidirme pero la verdad que me está encantando, especialmente con mi campera de jean grande. No tiene ninguna marca que identifique le artesane ni la época así que no sabemos si era de mi abuela o mi visabuela: si alguien tiene idea, por favor diganme!

So, those are my rings: I love my collection. As aforementioned, I decluttered recently and decided that although there are quite a few, I think they're all really distinct from each other and have their own story. Looking at them now, it's a good thing I bought that filigree ring back in 2014 because otherwise, I wouldn't have such a lovely and diverse collection!
Bueno, ahí están mis anillos: amo mi colección. Como dije, me deshice de muchas cosas este mes y me quedé con lo que realmente me gusta. Siento que todos tienen una historia y distintivos. Mirándolos para hacer este post, menos mal que me compré ese anillo de filigrana en 2014 porque si no, no tendría semejante colección!
